Suturing

Suture techniques

Suture technique is something that really must be taught in a practical tutorial and so is outside of the scope of this handbook. You should, however, be aware of the various suturing techniques and situations in which they can become useful:

• Simple interrupted: most commonly employed suture for intraoral and extraoral wounds. Easy and effective.

• Continuous: can be more time efficient for closing longer linear wounds, but more technique sensitive and if part of suture is cut or pulled through, the whole thing can come loose.

• Horizontal mattress: good for areas where compression is needed (i.e. around a socket), can be modified to include cross-over X-pattern.

• Vertical mattress: most often used to take the tension out of a wound or to provide strength when closing.

• Deep sutures: buried beneath the skin surface with knot at the deeper aspect. Used to take tension out of a wound before superficial closure, resorbable suture must be used.
